Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 84

This grant enabled 84 students (2 teachers and 2 blocks each) to benefit from outstanding chapter book novel studies. These books are all on the county BEST books approved list.  Our students were thrilled to branch out from our regular reading series short stories and tests to these books.  Students listen to and read, then work independently or with a partner or goup to answer questions on comprehension, inferencing, main idea, summarizing, etc. The teacher created novel study units to go along with the books.

We hope that not only will it help with FAST scores by improving the skills listed above, but it will also create interest in rich literature and an increased love of reading.

Thank you for your continued support of our children and our community!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Provide each child with an approved BEST book to use during Novel Studies and read aloud times.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

Mrs. Bowen and I have 44 students each. We plan to use the BEST book sets for upper elementary-level novel studies. These books will help prepare the students for FAST. Book sets are needed for the students to be able to use sticky notes to mark passages and to keep track of vocabulary or "aha" moments. Integrating literature to our current curriculum creates excitement and eager readers.

Benefits to my students

We are requesting Book sets of 44 to be used by each student as well as the teacher. These sets are for two different teachers in our grade. Books for novel studies will be supplemented with questions and activities to measure the students' comprehension of the text. Creative activities are also part of novel studies. These activities may include illustrating, inferring, or recreating a scene. These activities may also include debates or Socratic Seminars. With the proper materials, we would incorporate novel studies throughout the year to promote reading interest. Increased interest leads to more minutes reading. Higher time periods of reading increases vocabulary and fluency which aid in comprehension. Fluency and comprehension are needed across all subject areas. Increases in these should help to increase test scores. These book sets are approved by the District.

Budget Narrative

four sets of 44 books will be ordered from Amazon. The books are from the BEST books approved list.
We are also ordering copy paper to use for the question sets that go with each book.
