My class has 7 ESE students ages 3 to 5. Some of my students are verbal and some are non-verbal. My students struggle with behavior and needs lots of movement. Movement stimulates both sides of the brain. kinesthetic activities are powerful in the classroom. Rocking/jumping and swinging is two specific stimulations that my students need throughout the day. It also helps them process sensory information. Pushing using their legs also helps with gross motor strength. My goal is to strengthen their sensory experiences by having movements items more accessible to the students throughout the day, not just outside but in the classroom and gym as well. I will tract the behaviors by using IEP data sheets and teacher created checklist.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

This was more impacting then I could ever image.  I was able to share most of my items by putting them into the gym. My cooworkers had so many great things to say about how the students loved using many of the items.  The stress relief that these items created were so powerful.  Special needs student can feel out of their element throughout the day and having access to these items was so important to calm them.  There anxiety was relaxed by using these items.  On rainy days we were able to use some of the riding toys in my room.  The balance they gained from riding the skooters was incredible.  They were able to get so much energy out when needed by using the trampoline which is located in my classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Special needs students often needs breaks many times during the school day no matter where we are. Sometimes it is difficult for my aide to take them outside to the swings, rocking toys, and riding toys. My students will be allowed to swing and rock/jump and use riding toys during these breaks. The items will be located in the gym and in my classroom allowing my aide to stay in the same area that I am in as well as the rest of the class. 

 

Benefits to my students

Rocking/jumping, pushing/pulling and swinging can strengthen specific sensory experiences that special needs children encounter. When special needs children feel out of their element, swinging and rocking helps their minds calm down, lessens their anxiety and can relax them. It can also help them with balance, gross motor skills and coordination that often special needs children struggle with.
