Impact to My Classroom

Students at WDE enjoyed reading these new non-fiction texts. As soon as I checked in the books, students were checking them back out. Multiple times I had students come in searching for one of these texts to discover that it was checked out to someone else. Students really seemed to like the sports biographies.

My books arrived at the end of January. Six of the books did not have Accelerated Reader quizzes. My grant proposal said that my students would take 300 quizzes on these books. However, my students only took a little over 200 quizzes on these books. Many of the books are second and third grade reading levels. Many teachers will only allow students to test within their specified grade level. This prevented some students from testing on the books. Although we didn't meet the goal, I know that my students will continue to read and enjoy these books for years to come.

Goal

My goal is to increase literacy in my school by updating my non-fiction collection. I want to add current high interest books to my library. As noted in this article, "One of the keys to helping struggling readers is to provide them with books that they can and want to read." What will be done with my students

I will promote one new series of books each month through presentations on our morning show, emails to teachers and book displays. All of the books that I am ordering are non-fiction or "real." My collection currently contains a lot of out of date materials. This grant will help to permanently improve my collection. Students will be encouraged to read and take Accelerated Reader tests on these 38 books.

Benefits to my students

Students enjoy reading about topics that are relevant and high interest. Currently, my biography section is 17 years old. My sports section is 14 years old. And my social sciences section is 19 years old. I want to purchase hardback copies as well as ebooks so that students will be able to read at home on by using ebooks if they don't have a hard copy. By updating these sections of my library, students will have more interest in these areas. All 691 students and 40 teachers in our school will have access to these materials. By May 2022, students will take 300 Accelerated Reader tests on these books.
