Goal

To help our struggling readers, who show signs of dyslexia, become proficient in the five critical skills that students must master in order to become proficient readers: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, according to the National Reading Panel.

What will be done with my students

Most of the children who will be benefiting from this computer based program have already been identified as "at risk learners." These children participate in daily small group reading lessons and receive specialized, direct instruction developed by the teacher, which focuses on the Core 5 principals- phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. If we are awarded the grant and we are able to add the Lexia Core 5 program to our remediation, the children will be able to log onto the Lexia Core 5 program, after the whole group lesson. They will work individually on their personal skill deficits. The teacher will be freed up to work with individual students on specific skills. Meaningful 1-1 instruction will be done by the teachers, while the rest of the group has meaningful yet fun activities to do while practicing their own needed skills.
The children will be evaluated, and the teacher will collect data on an ongoing basis. The program alerts the teacher to areas of concern for each student and the next day’s lessons are tailored from those needs.
The program has a thorough in-depth evaluation piece for teachers, as well. The student performance data is easy to access and simple to interpret. Reports will be pulled weekly by the teachers to monitor student progress. The results will be shared with the other teachers who work with each child and at the whole school data chats. Lexia Core 5 also provides teachers with resources they need for face-to-face instruction and independent student practice. This information is part of the evaluation reports.

Benefits to my students

By working on the Lexia Core 5 program, each student will improve their reading abilities. Then will perform better in all subject areas, because they will be able to read text better. They will increase their participation in class because they will become more confident readers. By adding this computer program to our daily routine, we can incorporate more, much needed, individualized instruction. None of the students will be left behind or become bored during small group instruction. If the child needs more time to master a skill, they'll have it, while the students who learn quicker will not be waiting for the slower learners to catch up.
When they first log into the computer program, students are placed automatically at their proper phonemic awareness level based on their initial performance. They work independently on developing their fundamental reading skills in targeted activities based on their individual needs. Lexia provides explicit, systematic, adaptive learning, scaffolding instruction for students as they struggle. The program advances them to higher levels as they demonstrate proficiency.
Once all the children are fully engaged in the meaningful, yet fun computer lessons, the teacher can work 1-1 and target the deficit skills that are specific to each child.
The Lexia Core 5 program is research-proven to improve learning outcomes required by federal mandates. It is engaging and fun for the students.
Teachers are very limited in time and the size of our small group remediation groups gets bigger and bigger. It becomes harder and harder for teacher to adequately focus on individual needs of each child. By adding this computer program to our daily routine, we can target individual needs and our remediation can be more child specific. All children will improve their reading skills and hopefully, some will no longer need to attend remediation groups.
We currently have 15 students who would benefit from this program, however the number of children who we identify as at risk readers increases by the day. We can add students to this subscription as soon as they are identified as "at risk" and this program will become more valuable and cost efficient as the year continues.

Budget Narrative

The $1500 is for a school subscription to Lexia Learning- Core 5 program. It will allow us to assign accounts to our struggling readers, specifically those who show signs of dyslexia and are already recieving extra reading support. The subscription last for 1 calendar year.
