Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to increase informational technology and literacy skills with my 20 third grade students. Additional iPads will give more of my students access to a variety of applications that will support them in all content areas. In addition, it will allow them to enhance their literacy skills by using RazKids, (which I purchased) and creating an online portfolio using Seesaw. As of right now, almost one-third of my students scored below 40% on the STAR reading. Access to literacy applications and building an online portfolio will highly engage them in reading and writing. My goal is to have students who scored below the 40th percentile increase by 15% on the final STAR reading assessment. In addition, half of my students scored less than half the points on my in-class writing assessment. My goal is to increase their writing skills through the use of technology and district resources. Standards addressed would include LAFS.3.L.1.1, (b-j) LAFS.3.L.1.2, (a-f) LAFS.3.L.2.3, (a-b) LAFS.3.R1.1.1, LAFS.3.RI.3.7, LAFS.3.RI.1.1, LAFS.3.W.1.2, and standards students share in their portfolio around math, science, and social studies.
Objectives: To increase final STAR reading scores from first STAR reading assessment by 10% for students who scored below 40%

What will be done with my students

In addition to giving more students more access to computer applications that engage them in learning and practicing skills that align with the Florida State Standards, students will create online portfolios that require them to demonstrate their learning and self-assess their learning. Student self-assessment has a high effect size rating (Hattie), on student achievement. Seesaw is a free, safe, online portfolio that can only be viewed by their teacher and parents. Students will create the portfolio in class during reading centers, math centers, and triple i time. I will oversee their work. I am required to approve all posts. Students will use their portfolios to monitor goals and conduct student-led conferences in the spring of 2019. Included in the portfolio will be learning targets accompanied by success criteria. They will show examples of work and share their individual goals. This is a way for students to engage in evidence-based reading and writing.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of technology in the classroom are extensive. Being proficient in technology is essential for all college-bound and workforce ready individuals. The online portfolio will be a way for students to monitor goals and self-assess their work. The online portfolio is also a performance assessment. It allows three different viewers to assess and suggest ways to improve skills. Every student in the classroom will be impacted this year. They are all excited about the creation of their portfolio and view it as a way to learn and self-assess.
