Walton Education Foundation

In order for students to be engaged in the classroom, they must feel comfortable. Feeling comfortable has both physical and mental components. This grant focuses on the physical comfort of my students. Many students have difficulty staying still in a chair in the classroom. Movement about the classroom is often encouraged, but we can make these students more comfortable when they must sit by providing alternate forms of chairs. This goal does not impact a specific standard or benchmark for learning. It is intended to benefit the student in learning all content by providing a more comfortable environment. When students are comfortable, they can focus on the intended learning targets more closely and improve their learning. As a teacher, I can also spend less time directing students to sit properly in their seats and more time on direct instruction, small group learning, or one-on-one student assistance. Improvement in these aspects of the learning environment will have a positive impact on student engagement which will in turn improve student performance on all standards.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 108

Students were provided 8 wobble stools and 4 rocking chairs.  Students were very excited for the new seating options.  Many students feel the need to move during class time and these seating options provided a safe, non-distracting method of movement for those students.  Students were provided the choice of the new seating on a daily basis.  Many students were verbally grateful for the chairs and I saw a marked improvement in many of my anxious students ability to focus.  These chairs will continue to serve future students in my classroom and I hope to provide more options to increase the comfort level of the classroom for my students while still maintaining the focused environment necessary for a successful classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

I would like to purchase two different types of chairs that can accommodate my students that tend to be restless. The first type of seat is a stool that provides the student the opportunity to "wobble". This allows students to quietly move in any direction without distracting other students. The second type of seat is a simple rocking chair. It looks like a standard student seat, but allows the student to rock slightly backwards. This will accommodate students that are constantly leaning back in their chairs for their own comfort. The rocking chair is safer for the student and prevents damage to the standard student seat. Students will be given complete choice in the type of seat they use in the classroom. This gives students a sense of ownership of their environment, therefore an ownership of their own learning.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of providing alternate seating is providing a more comfortable learning environment for students. A more comfortable learning environment promotes higher engagement by the student. When students are actively engaged in lessons, instead of being distracted by their discomfort, learning opportunities increase. This increase in engagement and learning must have a positive impact on the student acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to satisfy science standards and benchmarks. Our science classroom will be much more successful when my students can relax and feel content in their learning environment.

Budget Narrative

Active learning stools are $44.88 each and I would like to purchase 8 of them. Zuma Rockers are $113.88 and I would like to purchase 4 of them. This will change roughly half of my student seats in the classroom.
