Walton Education Foundation

As a Title I school, most of our students do not have access to technology based reading programs. Based on initial reading diagnostic data, only 69% of our 39 third graders performed at/above grade level expectation. Our goal is to increase the percentage of 69% to 75% of our students performing at/above grade level. This goal is in conjunction with our school improvement plan which states all third graders will score at or above 75% on the same diagnostic reading assessment in Spring of 2017.
Standards Targeted (included but not limited to)
• Florida Standards addressing the six Reading of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
• Students will develop and improve their Reading Foundational skills and will know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills
• Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension of both literary and informational text.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 39

As a Title I school, most of our students do not have access to technology based reading programs. Based on initial reading diagnostic data, only 69% of our 39 third graders performed at/above grade level expectation. Our goal is to increase the percentage of 69% to 75% of our students performing at/above grade level. This goal is in conjunction with our school improvement plan which states all third graders will score at or above 75% on the same diagnostic reading assessment in Spring of 2017.

The impact for our success was increased though not as substantially as we had projected.  We estimated a 75% increase  and we showed an overall 71% that performed on grade level expectation.

We recieved our technologies the latter part  of March and consequently our culminating data point was taken in early April so we were not able to provide a substantial amount of introduction, practice and remediation. However, the highlight was the motivational factor with students given ownership to use the ipads at their discresiton. They were highly engaged and excited to get the opportunity to use the ipads for reading, locating words with the online dictionary, practice with text to improve fluency, the use of the apps for reading content games and online assessment.

This was easily a classroom management tool to encourage success and provide student independence which promotes independent and confident learners. Though our overall goal wasn't met we have learned through this project how putting the learning into our students hands will always lead to success.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Specifically the instructional strategy focus with the implementation of the technology is to provide opportunities for students to collaborate and receive tiered instruction, through varied level of texts and interactive literacy based activities.
An initially integrated application is the use of iPad when reading to use and or reference:
• content specific glossaries
• electronic dictionaries
• thesauruses
• translation sites
• content videos
• other online references
• individually appropriate leveled reading sources
This will give students opportunities to practice using language in authentic ways. These types of resources are the first level of support for building scientific language and vocabulary. They provide students with a way to access more information about a specific term and to be more independent in their reading of content area texts.
Use of iPads during instruction can also allow for repeated viewings of a video, animation, or slide show, allowing students to return to the content multiple times and build mastery.

Benefits to my students

As a result of the implementation of this project using this technology (iPads) all 39 students will be provided with the opportunity to learn basic technology skills while they are receiving highly engaging, quality reading support tailored to their differentiated levels of learning and reading rates.
The ultimate benefit is to meet the end of year expectation of increasing the percentage from 69% to 75% of our students performing at/above grade level. This goal is in conjunction with our school with our school improvement plan which states our third graders will score at or above 75% on the reading assessment in the Spring 2017.
