The desk cycle will enable students who are always on the go or up and down and out of their seats to receive the physical stimulation that they are lacking. With the desk cycle, students will be in constant motion while completing their learning targets at their seats, whether that "seat" is actually at their desk, or at a table in a small group or independent environment.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

The six Desk Cycles enabled my students to engage in physical activity while staying on task during sedentary assignments. Four students were selected to use the desk cycle at their desks due to hyperactivity and their history of moving around the room at inappropriate times.  Two of the desk cycles were placed at a "community" location where all students would have an opportunity to utilize the cycles.  One of the four students who initially received the Desk Cycle at their desk, did not do well with the device. He tends to be a little clumsy and the additional interference of space proved difficult for him to manuever in and out of his work area, therefore another student was chosen to receive the extra desk cycle. The four individual desk cycles allowed those students to release their extra energy through pedaling the cycle rather than romaing the room and avoiding thier work.  These four students seemed to enjoy the cycles and consistently used them without redirection.  These students showed significant progress with work completion and on-task behaviors.  The desk cycles at the "community" location were also a big hit.  Often students were motivated to get to them first, so we had to create a sharing system set up on a timer which allowed all students to have a turn.  The class enjoyed adjusting the resistance of the pedaling to see their respetive strengths.  In conclusion, the Desk Cycles were a benefit to my classroom dynamics and the students' engagement during classtime.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The desk cycle will enable students who are always on the go or up and down and out of their seats to receive the physical stimulation that they are lacking. With the desk cycle, students will be in constant motion while completing their learning targets at their seats, whether that "seat" is actually at their desk, or at a table in a small group or independent environment.

What will be done with my students

Students who have the tendency to avoid work or continuously have incomplete assignments due to difficulty staying in their seats will be given a Desk Cycle. The teacher and students will set academic goals. The students will be encouraged to maintain their focus on their assignments while remaining on task at their working location around the room.

Benefits to my students

The Desk Cycle will help those fidgety or active students remain focused throughout the day. Not only will it allow students to remain focused for academic growth, but it will also give additional opportunities for physical activity for my class since we have to stay in the classroom for over a 3 hour stretch of time.
