Supply Kits for Volusia Online Learning (VOL) Elementary Students

Volusia Online Learning

Enrollment for the Volusia Online Learning program has grown by 400% because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We want our elementary students to have a positive experience and be excited about their new learning environment. Remember getting your new school supplies for your first day of school? These kits will help our students make a smooth transition to our online platform by giving them all the necessary tools they need to be comfortable and successful on their first day, and each day thereafter.

“Pharaohs, Pyramids and Mummies, Oh My! Using STEM-based Centers to Uncover the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt”

Southwestern Middle School

Mysterious mummies, colossal pyramids, child pharaohs—no subject is quite as fascinating to students as ancient Egypt. While students are already familiar with many aspects of Egyptian culture (who doesn’t recognize King Tut or the pyramids?), most students don’t realize the number of ways the ancient Egyptians employed the components of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). My goal is for the students to obtain an understanding of how STEM principles helped the ancient Egyptians create a sophisticated civilization whose lasting impact is still felt today. By participating in STEM-based centers, the students will get a hands-on experience about how science, technology, engineering and math influenced how the ancient Egyptians lived. SS.6.W.2.5 -- Summarize important achievements of Egyptian civilization (mummification) SS.6.W.2.3 -- Identify the characteristics of civilization. SS.6.W.1.3 -- Interpret primary and secondary sources. (artifacts).
