Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 165

Implementing my project, Anchoring Down Mathematics with Base 10 Blocks, proved to be a success in enhancing students' understanding of place value and bolstering their skills in addition and subtraction within grades 1 and 2. By employing these tactile tools, our classroom teachers facilitated a hands-on learning experience, allowing students to visually grasp the concept of numbers and their relationships. The concrete representation provided by the base 10 blocks enabled students to develop a deeper understanding of place value, while the gridded anchor chart paper served as a versatile tool for illustrating mathematical concepts. As a result of this project, remarkable improvements were observed in student performance. Second-grade classrooms achieved an impressive average of 74 or higher on their assessments for adding and subtracting numbers within 1,000. In first grade, students demonstrated substantial progress, with an average score of 88.5% on assessments for adding 2-digit and 1-digit numbers, and a commendable average of 78.5% on assessments for subtracting 1-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers. This project undoubtedly played a pivotal role in fostering a solid foundation in mathematics for our students, providing them with the skills and confidence needed to excel in their mathematical journey.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Help us ‘Anchor Down Mathematics with Base 10 Blocks!’ I am seeking support to purchase anchor chart supplies and magnetic base-10 blocks to enhance 1st and 2nd grade students' understanding of place value, specifically focusing on multi-digit addition and subtraction. This initiative aims to strengthen the foundation for a generalized place value understanding and emphasize the conceptual grasp of three-digit numbers.

What will be done with my students

We plan to use the anchor chart supplies and magnetic base-10 blocks to provide 1st and 2nd-grade students with the tools they need to develop a robust understanding of place value and mathematical fluency. Jumbo magnetic base-ten blocks and gridded anchor chart paper will empower students to actively participate in their learning, reference essential information, and build a strong foundation for future mathematical success. This endeavor will be implemented throughout the year. This request will support multiple standards including, but not limited to, NSO.1.1 (Read and write numbers from 0 to 1,000 using standard form, expanded form, and word form), NSO.1.2 (compose and decompose three-digit numbers in multiple ways using hundreds, tens, and ones. Demonstrate each composition or decomposition with objects, drawings, expressions, or equations), NSO.2.2 (Identify the number that is ten more, ten less, one hundred more and one hundred less than a given three-digit number), and NSO.2.3 (Add two whole numbers with sums to 100 with procedural reliability. Subtract a whole number from a whole number, each no larger than 10, with procedural reliability).

Benefits to my students

The anchor charts and base 10 blocks will be an invaluable reference tools. They will provide students with a constant visual reminder of key concepts and strategies, fostering independent problem-solving skills. The created charts will promote a sense of self-reliance, encouraging students to consult them when faced with challenges, ultimately building their confidence in their abilities. The grid paper format offers a structured format for organizing information related to place value and mathematical operations. Grid paper allows teachers to create clear and organized visual representations of concepts, making complex ideas more manageable and facilitating the transition to abstract thinking.
Student-created anchor charts hold immense educational value as they encourage active participation and ownership of learning. When students are involved in the creation process, they are more likely to internalize and retain the information. These charts serve as visual aids that can be tailored to students' unique needs and learning styles, making the content more accessible and engaging.
