Engaging our Future Mathematicians and Scientist Through Technology

Athenian Academy

The goal of this grant is to increase technology in my classroom. Technology can be used to help aid in the learning process. A goal for any teacher is to have engaging lessons. The tablets will do just that. With internet access the possibilities are endless. This will not only engage student learning but should also increase student academic performance.

Literacy Footprints Kit for 4th Grade Students

Azalea Elementary School

Our goal is to systematically grow students in reading by using Jan Richardson's Next Steps in Guided Reading Program. Literacy Footprints is designed for classroom teachers to use with their students or provide interventions to low achieving scholars. It meets the needs of diverse learners by providing vocabulary rich lessons for ELL students and helps support students in special education programs by providing appropriate scaffolds. Each kit contains sequenced, high-quality leveled texts in a variety of genres. Students will experience the richness of traditional tales, realistic fiction, fantasy, and informational texts that will allow to move from emergent to fluent readers. The goal is to continue the work that has been done in kindergarten through third grade by providing another year of systematic teaching strategies outlined by Jan Richardson to increase our students ability to fill in the holes they need in foundational skills while increasing their ability to comprehend text to meet the rigor to the common core standards.

We 'Tech'nically Love To Learn By 'App'lying Ourselves

Bauder Elementary School

My goal is to create students who are 21st century thinkers and learners, and prepared for the demands of middle, high school, and beyond while developing a love for the quest of knowledge. Currently, we have had in place for 5 years the Seminole Educational Ecosystem that consists of about 14 schools in our areas, and we collaborate a few times a year to see what is needed not only in our school, but beyond.I would love my students be able to use technology to enhance their curriculum. This will allow students to be able to not only complete work at school, but students will be able to access the same assignments at home. Assignments will be 'pushed out' through Office 365. Here students will be able to see assignments and the teacher will be able to give feedback. Since technology is continuing to be such a crucial part of everyday lives, it seems only natural to begin students at a young age on their journey through technology. Students will also be producing an ePortfolio of their assignments.

Preparing Students for Future Financial Success

Calvin A. Hunsinger

Calvin Hunsinger is a “center” school for students with Special Education Services, who experience severe emotional and behavioral issues. Our goal, in high school, is to have a School Store where students learn money management by 'earning' points based on their behavior, work completion and on task learning. Then they are able to 'spend' or 'save' their 'money' (points) at the Store. Students will learn how to spend wisely, save and budget their money so they can make solid 'financial' decisions for things that they want. Our students will record their daily “points” which translate to a banking sheet. This will ensure accurate spending and savings to allow desirable purchases in both the short term and long term. If their records are not up to date, they will not be allowed to shop at the Store. This will allow students to manage their money (points) based on their current financial situation. I believe that these skills will generalize to the real world when students begin their own financial lives. My hope is that this opportunity to manage their Store points will provide them with a model of how to make responsible decisions that will positively impact their financial futures.

Critical Thinking for All Students

Cypress Woods Elementary School

The fifth grade English Language Arts teachers at Cypress Woods Elementary would like to use the research-based document-based questioning (DBQ) project to increase student knowledge and academic performance on the Florida Standards Assessment. The DBQ Project would allow us to deliver instruction in a way that engages the students of today because it engages all students in high-level critical thinking using high-interest topics that pique student curiosity. We share the core values that all students, regardless of age, race, gender, socio-economic status, or ability level deserve to learn how to think critically, to question documents and information, to learn to read deeply for understanding, and to learn to produce evidence-based writing that conveys that thinking.

Firing Up Synapses Through Drumming!

Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School

'Imagine an interactive circle of kids, all drumming together, holding a common pulse and weaving a facilitated rhythm into a cohesive musical experience.” Giving Tree Music is a production company that actually delivers everything they advertise. You will indeed experience “laughter, learning, and an increased mutual respect between teachers, students and their peers,' just as they advertise on their website.
Many years ago, I originally experienced this wonderful event when I took my gifted students to a nursing home. I was so impressed with the high energy level of the instructor and how he exuded passion for his music while receiving 100% audience participation, that I booked him for my school.
Giving Tree Music truly feels that their program is not just about drumming. They “use the drums as a vehicle to build community and empower individuals to find their own true voice.” Sadly, many students do not find a level of academic success in school, and they feel truly free and happy when outside at PE, or creating in the art room, or performing at music. This production is the perfect vehicle to reach many children who learn through movement and/or music, which is one of the eight multiple intelligences. There are no other programs around that could remotely match the level of rich participation from students and adults alike. Gulf Beaches wants to use all creative means possible to motivate our students to raise test scores and learn at their highest potential.

The goal is to start a community garden with planters, seeds, and tools that students, staff, and teachers can use. There will be separate garden areas for mindfulness, science, and reading that align with the school's plan for behavior management and overall proficiency. The garden would be a space for students to practice and enrich skills they are learning in class and connect these skills to hands-on, real life experiences. Students will be able to practice hands-on science skills including plant and animal life cycles, plant parts, measuring weather, etc. This space will give students a chance to experience science concepts that they otherwise may not have access to, which will improve FSA science test scores and practical knowledge. The garden will also serve as a reward for students who read a certain amount at home, increasing literacy and love for reading.

Ready to Engage, Ready to Learn

Pinellas Park Elementary School

Many students with disabilities (SWD) struggle with focus and engagement within small groups. This leads to them falling significantly behind their academic peers. Not only do these students fall behind due to focus and motivation, but the decrease of students reading levels also affect their performance. Utilizing iPads will intrigue these students to explore and motivate them to learn by incorporating 21st century skills into academic achievement. This will be measured by the Measurement of Proficiency (MAP) a district-wide assessment by having the students achieve their growth goal which is determined by their previous assessment performance.

Virtual learning and monitoring

Pinellas Park Elementary School

Students with disabilities have individualized education plans (IEP) that monitor their progression towards being at grade level with their peers. Students with IEPs, have goals which as monitored weekly to see if the accommodations, and scaffolding of standard level instruction are working for them to acquire proficiency. However, due to the frequency of the monitoring, time is lost on teaching and instead it is taken with assessments. With technology today, progress monitoring can be as simple as them logging into a computer take the assessment and come back to small group. Mobymax is a website that not only helps find the learning gaps of students but helps IEPs specialized design instruction become more precise; therefore, the goals more attainable. This will be measured by looking at the provided graphs after the instructional level assessment for students to reach their IEP goal by the end of their annual meeting date.

Welcome to My House

Sutherland Elementary School

Our goal is for six teachers to attend the Ron Clark Academy Experience in Atlanta, Georgia. The Ron Clark Academy is a place where educators can watch highly skilled teachers. Educators will participate in an interactive dynamic learning experience where they will observe live classes in action and attend workshops to learn about the house system.

The house system is an idea adopted from Ron Clark Academy to give students the opportunity to connect with students across classes and grades that they may not normally have a chance to interact with. This helps students gain more friendships and create a family-like culture at our school.
