Goal

Bridge the gap in musical achievement created by poverty affecting fine motor skills.

What will be done with my students

We want students in 3rd grade to begin playing recorder with a Nuvo Recorder+ instead of a standard recorder. These recorders have silicon keys instead of open holes. They will transfer to standard open-hole recorders in 4th grade, and the recorders will be cleaned & sanitized for the next cohort of 3rd-grade students and will become a permanent and lasting integration into our music program and impact students for years to come. Our music curriculum (QuaverEd) features 12 lessons in the 2nd semester that focus on reading/performing music and learning recorder. We also use recorders for our PK-5 Spring Concert for 3-5th grade.

Benefits to my students

Students in high-poverty areas struggle to develop fine motor skills due to environmental factors, this is supported by multiple studies on poverty's effect on motor skills. The Nuvo recorder is a much more accessible version of the recorder that will allow them to succeed in their first foray into wind instruments. This will scaffold their motor skills much more effectively and will help to reduce the disparity in students' musical achievement and participation in music caused by factors that are out of their control. This participation in high-quality music instruction will benefit students' long-term academic achievement and social-emotional skills.

Describe the Students

We are a diverse neighborhood school with a significant homeless population. 66% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch (21-22), 13% of our students are ESE students (not including gifted). We are also the zoned school for temporary, and permanent housing for a significant population of foster care students.

Budget Narrative

60 Nuvo Recorder+ instruments will cost $900 at $15 per unit. The extra $50 is for the shipping of the instruments.
