Goal

Our goal is to create positive, engaging, meaningful learning experiences for all students. By incorporating robotics into Math and Science lessons, we are able to deliver instruction in a way that will engage today’s student, while also giving them the opportunity to increase their coding, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.

What will be done with my students

The Thames & Kosmos Kids First Coding & Robotics kit allows students to build a robot named Sammy. Sammy instantly engages as it moves, lights up, and makes sounds. Programs are created by simply laying down a sequence of physical code cards. As the robot drives over the code cards, an OID optical scanner on the bottom of the robot reads the code cards one by one and loads the program. Sammy's simple design allows it to be incorporated into both whole-group and small-group math and science lessons where students collaborate to demonstrate their knowledge of measurement, types of motion, addition, subtraction, and more! The code tiles will allow even students who struggle with fine-motor skills and marker use to successfully engage in these cross-curricular STEM activities.

Benefits to my students

These materials will be shared with the entire 2nd grade team, allowing over 90 students to engage in collaborative STEM activities that foster creativity, problem-solving and joy for learning. Sammy will allow students to engage in higher-order thinking tasks that combine real-world 21st century skills with math and science content in a way that is both meaningful and memorable.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1, K-5 Countywide Engineering Magnet School in South St. Petersburg.

We have a very diverse population of students: 43% African American, 37% Caucasian, 2% Asian, 11% Hispanic, and 7% Multiracial, ASD units, ESE services, 20% enrolled in Advanced Academics programs.

Our school has jumped from a C to a B in the last schoolyear, and our hope is to continue to grow our students and our program. Thank you so much for considering us for this grant!

Budget Narrative

We are a tax exempt organization. Having 7 kits will allow students to work in partnership or small collaborative groupings.
