I will increase our reading scores by creating a spectacular reading village with exciting air forts to encourage and celebrate literacy. As part of the Safety Harbor Elementary School Improvement Plan for the 23-24 school year, our goal is to increase ELA proficiency in grades 3-5 by 10% on the FAST testing by utilizing instructional practices to motivate and deepen engagement through student experiences.
Students will read their library books in the air forts once a week. This will be done during their scheduled time in the library to allow all students to access the reading air forts.
Our goal is to provide our students with a unique reading experience to incentivize reading logs, Myon books, and even an inviting space for our cross grade-level peer tutoring program. Many of our students from our ESSA subgroups would benefit from having more opportunities within the school day to practice reading and this would be a fun and inviting way to engage with all students.
At Safety Harbor Elementary, we have a wide variety of learners. We have 9.7% English Language Learners, 15% ESE, and 2.35% of students with a 504-plan. Safety Harbor Elementary is unique in that we are above the district average for students with disabilities due to our ASD and Pre-k units. We had 59% proficiency for our 3-5 FAST testing, and our goal is to achieve 69% this school year.
