Goal

To create a powerful learning environment that will enhance student engagement and ultimately increase student learning.

What will be done with my students

The TI-Nspire CX Navigator System is a completely wireless classroom network communication system for the TI-Nspire CX CAS handlheld calculators it maximizes popular graphing technology and increases my ability to engage and assess student performance.

The classes that I teach are high level mathematics where it is easy for students to not fully understand concepts. The navigator system will connect each student calculator to my computer where I can project all calculator screens to the front board. This will allow students to discuss the different screens that they see. For instance, if we are graphing a function all student responses can be seen then the class can discuss why one student graph might look different from another.

Another feature of the system is a Quick Poll. This feature gathers instant feedback from students and provides me the ability to instantly assess student understanding.
Students will be able to participate in fun activities that will engage student thinking . An example is a student will be given a graph then the student can walk forward and backward to replicate the graph given to them. The graph that is created by them walking will be projected onto the front board. Discussion can be had about why the graph does or does not match the one given. This will assess their understanding of displacement, velocity, and acceleration.
The navigator system is a two-way communication system. This allows me to provide feedback and will allow me to see how students are approaching problems and assess their process of learning the material. It also allows the teacher to send files directly to individual students and then they can send responses back to the teacher.

Benefits to my students

My classroom is filled with many levels of students. The navigator allows me to give individualized instruction to my students. Based on the progress of different students that I see on my computer screen, I can adjust my instruction to meet individual student needs. The students will receive real-time feedback and I can adjust my instruction based on student needs or redirect a lesson as needed.

The navigator will allow me to zoom into one calculator screen by doing this my students can become the instructor directly from their desk. When students become the instructor they will increase their ability to communicate mathematics and enhance their learning of the material.

Describe the Students

I teach in the IB Program so my students enjoy learning. I continue to search and find ways to bring real world mathematics into their lessons. I look to find activities and projects that will help them think deeper which in turn will enhance their learning of mathematics. Some of the students in the classes are made up of the following types of students:
64 Gifted
1 ELL
6 504
1 ESE

Budget Narrative

The TI-Nspire Navigator system cost 2015.84. I plan to write another grant for $1000.00 for the additional funds. I have spoken to my administration team at the high school and any needed additional funds will be covered using the school budget. Thank you!
