Goal

The staff of Melrose Elementary is respectfully petitioning funds to drive and manage our Positive Behavior Supports and Intervention (PBIS) school store.

What will be done with my students

Throughout each day at Melrose Elementary scholars who are exhibiting the four guidelines for student success: respect, responsibility, safety, and attendance can earn “school money”. This school money can then be spent in our PBIS store for a variety of fun items. The school store is open biweekly, all school year, during each grade level lunch. Scholars can purchase up to two items each visit. The school money can also be spent to attend special schoolwide events such as “Painting with a Twist”. The first semester of the school year we had over 300 student customers at our school store, so next semester we are aiming for 95% student participation

Benefits to my students

PBIS Incentives motivate scholar at Melrose Elementary to abide by the guidelines for success, monitor their own behaviors, show effort and dedication regarding their learning, as well as reward extremely deserving students that are consistently responsible, respectful, safe, and present at school each day. The expected outcomes would be to increase students’ grades, attendance, and academic achievement level, while decreasing negative referrals and behaviors.

Describe the Students

We are a Title I school and the only elementary in the district that offers a magnet program specializing in journalism. Currently we a total of 346 students. Furthermore, we have a minority enrollment of 97.7%, 92% of the student population is economically disadvantaged. 50% of our school has low test scores and over 30% of our scholars are accruing high absences. The racial demographics of our students are as follows:
White: 2.3%
Black or African American: 88.2%
Hispanic/Latino: 6.4%
2 or more Races: 3.2%

Budget Narrative

The staff at Melrose Elementary is asking for $1,500 to supply and maintain our school store (students use school money they earn to attend this school store). The store is essential to student success because it motivates our students to attend school daily, engages scholars into learning and tasks, and it monitors scholar's own behavior, as well displays our school’s guidelines for success: respect, responsibility, safety, and attendance.
