To expose underserved children to Florida's freshwater ecosystems and learn about how to interact with alligators. Most of my students have not had the enrichment opportunities to experience trained professionals explaining how alligators and humans interact.
The Florida Aquarium, through their Water Wheels program, will come up for a presentation that includes live alligators. They will utilize specific materials that will create a hands-on experience with Florida's native habitats and fauna. This program can accommodate up to 125 students.
This will be part of AVID's College and Career Readiness program, so students can see that working with wildlife and with nature is important and valuable. I want them to envision different paths for their future.
My students largely come from Child's Park and are from low SES backgrounds. They are in AVID, however, meaning that they have shown academic potential. The AVID program is designed to help these students prepare for a better future.
The $195 is the amount that the Florida Aquarium charges for this program.
