Goal

At Athenian Academy, I work with English Language Learners and Tier 3/low achieving students. Most of my students are not reading on grade-level and my goal is to bring them up to their peers.

What will be done with my students

A crucial part of literacy learning is having engaging, grade level texts. The leveled texts at our school are out-of-date and our students are not motivated to read them. Over the next few years, I would like to build a school bookroom where teachers can borrow leveled texts. Teachers can use these books to teach their lowest students in small, guided reading groups.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit because they will be more motivated to read with new, high-interest leveled text. Teachers will have access to books that will meet the individual needs of their students and they will be able to pull their low achieving students into small, guided reading groups.

Describe the Students

Most of my students are English Language Learners. They usually know how to speak English, but need support in content vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. I also work with Tier 3, low performing students. They are the lowest 10% of students in each grade level. A lot of these students need support in phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight word knowledge. Leveled texts are a great way to teach these literacy skills.

Budget Narrative

These accelerated readers are intended for Kindergarten but will be used in grades K-2. I chose these 2 sets because the books support a range of reading levels. They include a variety of topics and genres and are motivating for my students..
