Goal

All Pinellas County Schools share in the same mission ‘to prepare each student for college, career, and life’. Starkey Elementary is a Title 1 school, so we are continually seeking outside opportunities to ensure our students can compete with those who are more affluent than them. By implementing coding with Rugged Robot, the students will have the opportunities to increase their knowledge of coding, problem solve, and explore careers.

What will be done with my students

Rugged Robot will be used in small groups for students to understand how the Tac Tiles represent the movement of the robot. Students will be able to see their code on the Tac Tiles, and then witness the Rugged Robot following their created code. Teams will work together to create sequences for the Rugged Robot to move around the classroom. When they have mastered using Tac Tiles, they will be given an additional challenge of coding the robot without the visual aide. As a final enrichment, teams will code Rugged Robot outside the classroom as it is built for all terrains.

Benefits to my students

Coding is the fundamentals of computer science, and Rugged Robot will allow students to see coding in action. Students will be able to see how technology interacts with the real world, and how technology enriches the quality of life of society. I’m excited to see the success of this cross curricular enrichment! Coding benefits reading gains as it helps students form connections and make meaningful discussions. Benefits in math include the students ability to create, Watch, and solve complex problems. Science will be enhanced as this presents the foundation of computer science- as students have to make the robot actually do things. Students will have an increased love for the STEM field and gain pride, confidence and joy.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. The school offers many after-school programs at no-cost due to the family’s inability to pay.
