My goal is to build my classroom library with grade level appropriate texts that are relevant and culturally appropriate for the audience I teach. I want my students to be excited about going to our classroom library and develop a love of reading. I also want to be able to provide texts for my students to take home and read with their families.
My students will be read to and will also be able to read texts that are current and relatable to our student population. They will also be able to take these books home to practice reading on their own and with their families.
Students will be able to develop a love for reading and will be able to not only learn to read, but also read to learn. My students will be able to get excited about reading more current books with topics that they can relate to. Students will also be able to see the diversity throughout the text that they read. Students will also be able to build stronger bonds with their family members through reading.
I have a mixed class of beginning readers who are all excited to learn how to read. My class has students that are English language learners and come from different cultural backgrounds. Most of my students come from low income families and live in low income neighborhoods.
