Goal

I want to help build a sense of community and family within my classroom during this time of uncertainty where students feel together and have a connection with each other, so providing opportunities to build character, incorporate movement and flexible seating into my classroom and advocating for self-awareness will help support and create a “family” within my middle school classroom!

What will be done with my students

Movement is such a crucial part in student learning and I hope that through the use of flexible seating, students can move and wobble within their designated space to help ensure their success! Improving concentration and helping students stay focused is a main focus of my classroom! Allowing students to sway back-and-forth and rock side to side, will allow students the movement they are allowed at their own pace and when they need it to help with concentration and focus!

To ensure success in building culture and community, I want to do team building activities through different art projects and collaborative activities. I want my students to be able to express themselves through different drawings and projects where they are learning their personal traits and characteristics while also showing the class their artist and cultural backgrounds. An design section within the classroom will allow students to create pictures of the math they are working with along with designs of themselves and their work to share with students, other staff members and their families. I would love to have a section in my classroom with different art supplies, classroom supplies and incentives: colored copy paper, treasure chest incentives, stickers, colored pens, glue, highlighters and markers; which would allow students to be as creative as they need, to have their project or design reflect themselves and the curriculum we are working on within the classroom.

Benefits to my students

Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages students to share both. And, it will encourage my students to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.

I know many families have expressed how they want to ensure their child stays engaged within the class while remaining socially distance. I would love to provide a space where each child in my classroom, feels they have a piece of themselves within my classroom, whether that is through artwork hanging on the walls or projects with classmates displayed in the halls. Allowing the projects or artwork to stay up for the entire class for all groups to see encourages more in-depth questions to be asked and more relationships to be built within my classroom. Having an opportunity for students to earn incentives for participating in community building encourages students to collaborate with classmates to help bridge gaps and create friendships.

Describe the Students

My 6th grade students are loving and amazing children who are very eager to learn. My students vary in all demographic areas as well as include students who would be the first in their family to attend college. My students are very determined to attend college, have a good attendance record and have the willingness to undertake demanding preparation for college or a career of their choice.

Budget Narrative

The flexible seating will be available for students who need the additional movement within their learning to stay focused and on task. Flexible seating will allow my students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.

The art supplies and classroom supplies will be used to build relationships between students in class and at home. Allowing students to express themselves helps them build a sense of community within my classroom. With having projects and team building activities within my classroom will allow students feel a sense of belonging and are is a great way to encourage students to continue their learning and to gain a sense of purpose.

Layering incentives within the classroom creates a culture of positivity and achievement where students celebrate milestones in their individual and shared learning. Extending a reward to my students helps to promote positive and appropriate behavior among students in my class. Through appropriate student behavior, I am able to concentrate on lesson content and interactive activities to indulge students in learning while focusing on classroom connections and community building.
