The main goal of this field trip is to extend our students' STEM education beyond the classroom. Students get a chance to expand their scientific and social knowledge. They will be using and advancing their critical thinking skills. Another goal of this field trip is to expose students to career options they might not have previously considered and promote an interest in the sciences.
The gifted and talent students in grade 4 and 5 at Fairmount Park Elementary will be going on a field trip to the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI). They will be participating in two of the educational programs MOSI has to offer: Robot Engineers (Robotics and Coding) and Kinetic Art (Engineering). Students get to learn about and use complex machines(Rube Goldberg) as well as design and build a Mars rover which they will then use to collect samples.
With Fairmount Park Elementary school being a Title 1 school, many of these students come from low income families. A field trip/destination like this is an experience many of them may not have experienced since MOSI is in Tampa and many families may get to leave their neighborhood/city often. In addition, students will benefit from collaborating, thinking like a NASA engineer, the pure joy of building their first successful Rube Goldberg style machine. Those are so fun to construct!
The gifted and talented students are a mix of high and average performers. They were selected for the gifted and talented program because of their high performance on the Gifted screening, MAP assessments, FSA and/or Psychological testing. They are students with great capacity for learning and critical thinking but also have great and varied interests.
If granted, the funds will be used to cover the cost for the students, the adults, as well as transportation. The cost for each student is $12 ($4 for the museum entry free and $4 for each of the activities we will be doing. We are doing two activities. That comes out to an addition $8/student). We get a free adult for every 10 students. Since we're taking 25 students and hopefully 6 adults, we'll have to pay for 4 of the adults. Additionally, some of the funds will cover a chartered bus for transportation since we are going out of our county.
