Goal

To have a successful choral performance during the Winter Concert that exhibits high student achievement and a high level of student engagement through the use of black lights.

What will be done with my students

My students will use black T-shirts on top of their white collared shirt, in order to use black lights for some songs. To produce an exciting visual effect, the students will wear white gloves, which will glow with the different coordinated movements that the students will create and perform as a team. This activity is directly aligned with the district aims and goals of Pinellas County, since, as stated in the curriculum, "Students...may attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom." The Winter Concert is a one-time activity at Gibbs High School, on December 13, 2021. However, the 4th and 5th Grade Chorus will be performing during the Spring Concert in May, in which the students might use the T-shirts for black lights performance as well.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from a high quality choral performance by being able to improve their vocal/choral, social, and critical and creative thinking skills. Through the choral experience, the students also develop expressive and stylistic interpretation, as well as part-singing. This experience would also reinforce their self- confidence as successful singers and their attitude toward music, which are predictor variables for their participation in middle school choir/music class in subsequent years. Other students not in the 4th and 5th Grade Chorus (including kindergarteners and 1st graders) attending the concert will also benefit by watching and listening their peers, who serve as role models, by exhibiting discipline, responsibility, creativity and passion for what they do.

Describe the Students

My school is culturally diverse, with a student population that is mostly African American from a low socioeconomic background. It is why this activity is crucial since choral singing is an integral part of the African American musical tradition. There are various levels of experience in chorus, but all of them eager to excel during the Winter Concert.
