All our students can learn to play strings. To give each of our 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to learn the beginning techniques of string instruments. We already study instruments of the orchestra and this would give us a practical instrument unit of study to enhance our curriculum and allow our students to find and express themselves through music.
Students will be given lessons by the music teacher on how to learn a string instrument during music class each week. The students will be taught using violins. Students can extend their instrument time practicing these instruments at the after school extended learning program.
Students have asked if they can learn how to play violin and this grant would offer the opportunity to outfit and resource a beginning string program. Playing violin would also allow for articulation between middle schools teachers and students and Brooker Creek Elementary students as they would have experience with string instruments prior to middle school. It would also allow students the opportunity to create a connection with an instrument they might not have access to outside the school environment.
Brooker Creek Elementary students exceed the district and state average for FSA scores. The students are ranked in the top 10% in Florida in Math, Science and ELA. 85% of 3rd - 5th grade are reading at or above grade level in FSA. Students that are low performing are involved in multi-tier systems to support their learning needs. We have students that are also receiving ESE services at the school from the school district. Students are very positive in music class and this request for learning string instruments came from one of our students!
The instruments are being sourced from an approved local vendor for Pinellas County Schools. The instruments are vintage and of a high standard made with ebony fret board, tuners and saddle solid wood body construction. They have been professionally set up so they are ready to play. These instruments would normally retail at a much higher price and new instruments of this quality would not be available in this price range. This allows us to reach more students in our school for violin instruction.
