Goal

To add to our instrument library so that we have a class set of each important instrument.

To repair instruments so they are able to be properly played and enjoyed. Attached image shows an example of an instrument that is in need of repair in several ways: loss of peg and tubing that has been replaced by thin rope.

What will be done with my students

Students will play these instruments several times throughout the year to practice a variety of different skills.
When students are playing instruments, they are often more engaged. When every student has an instrument and none have to share, they are more engaged instead of focusing on waiting their turn. Over the course of the year, all 6 grade levels will be playing xylophones and metallophones. They will be playing melodies, accompanying songs, writing their own music, improvising, using instruments to tell a story, and work on their instrument technique which is important and will give them a good foundation should they wish to continue to play mallet instruments later in their lives.

Benefits to my students

When we have enough working instruments, all students will be able to be engaged throughout the whole lesson. When playing together students are practicing proper instrument technique and reading music, as well as working together as a group and listening across their ensemble. Students will learn to play, improvise, and compose music using the instruments and will have more time and find more success when they are able to have their own instrument in front of them.

Describe the Students

Students of all levels will be impacted. We have 4 ASD units, ese students, ELL and ESOL students, L 25 and 35 performers, middle and high performers and gifted students. In music we don't have a 'gap.' All students can be successful and this success can boost their confidence so that they can and will be more successful in other areas like ELA, Math, and Science.

Budget Narrative

the first two items are instruments that will get us closer to having a full class set of xylophones and metallophones. The remaining items are for use in the repair of our current metallophones and xylophones: pegs that hold the bars in place and tubing that the bars rest on that allows them to resonate and vibrate longer (science!)
The shipping for the West Music Company is set at 7% of the order total over $250.
