The goal of this project is to create a classroom environment that meets the needs of all learners. As a new teacher, I have found that many of my students need additional sensory support to stay engaged throughout the day. Flexible seating allows for students to have just enough choice of movement to support their physical needs while still meeting classroom behavior expectations.

Goal

The goal of this project is to create a classroom environment that meets the needs of all learners. As a new teacher, I have found that many of my students need additional sensory support to stay engaged throughout the day. Flexible seating allows for students to have just enough choice of movement to support their physical needs while still meeting classroom behavior expectations.

What will be done with my students

With this grant, I will purchase a variety of flexible seating options to support the needs of all my students. I plan to use the flexible seating as a behavior motive by encouraging students to display appropriate behaviors. This reinforces logical consequences as well as my schools PBIS behavior model.

Benefits to my students

Research has shown that flexible seating increase student engagement, and performance in several ways. Choice of seating allows students to take ownership of their learning needs, increases opportunities for collaboration, significantly lowers the instances of off-task behavior, and allows for just enough movement to support their physical needs. Imagine a classroom environment where a “wiggly” student doesn’t need to be reminded to sit safely multiple times a day. Flexible seating decreases instances of instruction being interrupted by off-task behavior. Flexible seating results in happy, engaged, and high performing students.

Describe the Students

My school is a Title 1 school that supports students from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. My classroom supports a variety of learners including ESE, ELL, and students requiring behavior intervention support.
