Goal

The goal of this project is to provide students with a classroom environment that is adaptive to their needs. By providing flexible seating to students, it gives them the autonomy to choose a seating arrangement that best supports their learning style.

What will be done with my students

With this grant, I will purchase a variety of flexible seating options that students will be be able to choose from during whole group and small group learning . I have chosen several different types of seating that will suite different purposes and benefit student engagement.

Benefits to my students

Flexible seating is beneficial to students because it allows them to pick a seating style that best suites their needs and will allow them to remain engaged in classroom learning. I currently am teaching a group of first grade students, who are very energetic and have the "wiggles" often throughout the day. By supplying them with different seating options, they will be able to bounce. move, and wiggle, while still engaging in learning.

Describe the Students

My students are enrolled in the Center for Literacy Innovation (CLI) at Midtown Academy. This program is for students with reading disabilities (such as dyslexia) and struggling readers. All of my first graders are performing below grade level within reading and many within math as well. Most of them also struggle to focus and remain engaged in a typical whole group classroom setting. Flexible seating will help with this struggle. A unique part of this program is that students enrolled in CLI may rotate to other CLI teachers for the first 90 minutes of the day to work on their specific reading skills. During this time, other struggling students rotate to my classroom, so I may have a range of students from 1st grade through 5th grade within my room.
