Students will publish original pieces of writing in a professionally bound hard cover book.
Students will write fiction or non-fiction three page stories about animals. During the writing process, students will learn about illustrations, editing, and story telling techniques. They will brainstorm ideas with partners, small groups, and teachers. Once their writing is complete, they will submit it to the publishing company, Rescue Writing. Each student will receive a copy of the classroom anthology.
Throughout the year, students will participate in Writer's Workshop. They will gain skills to become fabulous authors, illustrators, editors, and publishers. This project will bring the writing process to life.
I teach Kindergarten at Eisenhower Elementary School. Eisenhower Elementary is a Title I School with free breakfast and lunch. The students come from a diverse background. In addition, Eisenhower has a very high ESOL student population. In Kindergarten, this poses additional struggles for students as they are often afraid to speak because they are embarrassed or do not want to say something that is wrong. However, most students can express themselves during Writer's Workshop through pictures and oral story-telling.
From my experience, it is amazing to know that no matter what barriers my Kindergarten students might be dealing with, they are fantastic scholars who really want to learn. They show effort and heart in the learning process. This allows me to teach and help them develop into great students and amazing little people.
Each anthology costs $35 plus 7% tax and $50 shipping. This covers the cost of a classroom set, so that each student will receive a copy.
