To provide culturally responsive texts to engage students in rigorous, standards-aligned instruction. Specifically, we seek to provide a high-interest and well crafted anchor text to teach the Florida B.E.S.T. standard
ELA.10.R.1.3: Analyze coming of age experiences reflected in a text and how the author represents conflicting perspectives. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo is uniquely positioned to function as a current and relatable coming of age text addressing conflicting perspectives while also introducing students to the complex text structure of the novel-in-verse. This text has won the National Book Award, the Michael L. Pintz Award, the Pura Belpre Award, the Boston-Globe-Horn Award, and the Walter Award. Its literary merit is without question and it is an outstanding example of literature that speaks to students' current lived experiences.

Goal

What will be done with my students

This text will be used as an anchor text to supplement our Pre-AP English 2 unit titled "Purpose in Poetry and Prose." This identity-affirming coming of age story will give students the opportunity to apply their learning from the unit and engage in a full-length book study. Students will explore literary point of view, notice authorial language choices, and engage in evidence based writing. This anchor text will also give students the opportunity to practice important active reading strategies on a book-length text (including annotation, summary, paraphrasing, questioning, and text-text, text-world and text-self connections).

Benefits to my students

This book-length study will challenges students conceptions about prose and poetry and expose them to a complex work worthy of close observation and analysis. Additionally, the story of a young Dominican girl in 2018 navigating the cultural expectations of her parents and the social expectations of her peers is a highly-relatable topic for our students which will allow them to immerse themselves in the reading and engage in culturally responsive conversations in reaction to it.

Describe the Students

Our Pre-AP students are primarily students of color who have not yet been successful on the FSA. Most of our students are reading below grade level and are also enrolled in a reading class to support their academic skill building. This project supports equitable access to rigorous content for all students.

Budget Narrative

We'd like 70 copies of The Poet X (currently 9.99 on Amazon) in order to have two class sets of 35 each, one for myself and one for Mr. Mosher.
