Goal

To increase High School ESE Science students with a rigorous depth of knowledge related to Mendelian Genetics and Heredity through use of hands on materials. To extend the students' understanding of how change through multiple generations (Mendelian Genetics Priniciple (1) The Law of Segregation (2) The Law of Independent Assortment) correlates with the Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection. 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will be given the opportunity to use manipulative materials allowing the students to visualize the microscopic world of genes and genetics through lab work and argument driven inquiry to have the base knowledge to extend their scientific "sense making" to the Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection. Students will participate in labs and activities related to genetics and heredity (expanding beyond strict dominant-recessive inheritance patterns and developing models of Punnett Squares). Students will use knowledge gained through the genetics labs to build a foundation for hands on activities related to the Theory of Evoloution (Natural Selection and Antibiotic Resistance, Change over Time and developing models of cladograms to graphically depict changes). 

 

Benefits to my students

Biology has many complex learning standards that are difficult for students to master. Providing ESE students with the hands on materials to become more connected with the conceptual aspects of genetics/heredity and evolution through natural selection will increase their understanding of SC.912.L.15.15 (Describe how mutation and genetic recombination increase genetic variation) and SC.912.L.15.1 (Explain how the scientific theory of evolution is supported by the fossil record, comparative anatomy, comparative embryology, biogeography, molecular biology, and observed evolutionary change).
Both of these concepts are cross-cutting ideas that run across many aspects of the Biology curriculum, allowing the knowlege and skills learned through the activities to be transferred to other science areas. 

 

Describe the Students

All students are Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. Students are Emotional-Behavioral Disorders, Other Health Impaired, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and/or School Based Mental Health. The students are served in an ESE center with 100% ESE population.

Students tend to be low performers in the traditional school setting. Students are staffed into the school through ESE Services with guardian approval. Low class ratio, social skills training infused throughout the day, weekly counseling and case management services assist the students to reduce behavioral concerns. Subject area teachers are dually certified with ESE certification in order to implement the most effective ESE classroom teaching strategies to help the students improve their subject understanding, knowledge base and show learning gains.

Students tend to be hands-on learners. They work best with materials that they can manipulate and work with through multiple scenarios. Students tend to be able to conceptualize the more rigorous high school science standards when they are engaged in hands on data collection and discovery. 

 

Budget Narrative

All budget goes toward models / activity kits which are durable and reusable or refillable for multiple classes. Supplies to be ordered through provided vendor of FISCHER, WARDS or CAROLINA Scientific. The unit breakdown of materials is divided into "Genetics/Heredity" and "Theory of Evolution"
