Goal

Create a classroom makerspace that will foster inquiry based thinking where students can explore hands-on activities, design experiments, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering.

What will be done with my students

With the makerspace students will be able to explore more deeply, concepts in mathematics, science, language arts and social studies. They will have the opportunity for creating authentic work products to show their understanding. Being able to explore academic concepts in this way will keep them truly engaged and excited about their learning .

Benefits to my students

A makerspace will make it possible for lessons to reach all four modalities of learning. Being able to provide this to students will connect all students to the kinesthetic, visual, auditory and tactile learning . It will provide them with a choice as to how they would like to show their understanding of the concept in a modality they prefer and/or experience other modalities of learning. A more engaged student will have greater success in their academics. This type of learning will also benefit our large percentage of English Language Learners.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 neighborhood school in Clearwater, Florida with a population of 599 students, PreK-5th grade. We have a student demographic of 58% Hispanic students, 18% Black students, 80% White Students and 4% Other Ethnicities. 40% of our students are English Language Learners.
