Goal

The goal of this project is to build motivation and excitement for reading through a community service project.

What will be done with my students

This project builds on the idea behind the painted kindness rocks. In an effort to increase engagement, my students will be reading the variety of books purchased and selecting favorites. Then they will write a note to a mystery friend about why they enjoyed the book. The books will be packaged in reinforced envelopes to protect them and will then be hidden around the campus for the next lucky reader to discover.
Students will keep a log of the books they have read and shared, and at the end of the project students will receive a book to take home as a thank you for their contribution to our school community.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from:
-a building of excitement about reading
-learning the value of acts of kindness for their community
- additional literature to read in the classroom
- additional literature for their home library

Describe the Students

I have a classroom of 17 boys and girls who mostly come from homes with a low socio-economic status. Their families struggle to provide the basic daily living items. Many students go home to an environment without literature. It would be wonderful to provide a love of reading and a desire to search out opportunities to communicate and share that love with others.
2 Students are gifted
6 students are talented
2 students are ESE (learning delayed)
1 student speaks English as a second language
15 students qualify for free or reduced lunch

Budget Narrative

Thank you for this opportunity. The funds provided will impact the literacy of an entire school of students as well as giving my class the opportunity to impact the love of literacy of other students at Lealman.
