Goal

The goal of this project is to encourage a love of literacy throughout the school.

What will be done with my students

This project was inspired by the Kindness Rocks initiative, where people leave painted rocks around popular places for others to find and be encouraged by as they continue to pass them on. My students will each choose a book from the selection of the books purchased. They will then read their book in the classroom. Once they've finished reading their book, they will write a note to review the book. We will then place their books and notes in reinforced envelopes (to protect them from the weather) to then leave in places around the school. Other students will have the opportunity to find these books around the school to then read. They will continue the legacy by writing a review once they've finished reading the book and placing it in another spot around the school.

Benefits to my students

My students will be inspired and excited to read these books. I want to spread and encourage a love of reading. Reading can take my students to places they have not been before as they dive in. This will also create a positive climate across the campus as we encourage students to find, read, and pass on the books they have grown to love to others. This project will impact the whole school of 400 students; however, it will be initiated by my third grade classroom. As a final gift, I would like to give each of my seventeen students a book to treasure and take home as the initiators of the Literacy Legacy at Lealman.

Describe the Students

I have a wide range of wonderful, ready to learn students. I have two students who are Gifted, five students who are Talented, three students who speak English as a second language, and seven students who are struggling as readers. These students mostly come from homes with a low socio-economic status. They struggle to provide basic living items. Many of my students go to homes where they have no books to read. It would be wonderful to enrich their lives and put books into their hands so they can step into a world of wonder without leaving their desk.

Budget Narrative

I will purchase a variety of books to address all reading levels and interests as there are diverse readers in my classroom and throughout the school. The designer poly envelopes will attract the students' eyes and protect the books as they wait for readers to give them a temporary home before passing them on to another eager learner. The sticky notes will allow students to leave a note for other readers. Thank you so much for this opportunity to initiate and leave a Literacy Legacy at Lealman.
