The goals of this grant are threefold: increase instructional participation through the use of movement, increase communication skills, use various forms of assistive technology, along with sensory input and/or stimulation and lastly, promote higher levels of achievement with the students served. Research has shown that there are really no prerequisite skills that students must demonstrate prior to implementing augmentative communication or assistive technology devices. The research shows that implementation of such technology can be critical in developing pre-communication skills through cause and effect activities.

What will be done with my students

To provide resources to purchase technology necessary to increase the communication/sensory skills of students with visual impairment, physical and cognitive impairments who do not respond as readily as others to tradition stimuli. This type of technology is important for our students who have little outside stimulation and/or interaction based on their physical and heath limitations. These materials will facilitate improved visual, sensory and communication skills.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to my students from this grant will be determined by the students' growth in their levels of visual participation, alertness and engagment during the vision instruction sessions, as evidence by data collected throughout the school year and compairing it to the data collected receiving and implementing the new materials for sufficient period do time. this data will be collected during vision instruction sessions implementing new materials and communication devices via a specially designed instructional scoring rubric with a range of 1-4 and analyzed weekly for improvement trends. i should see the visually impaired students to whom this technology and related instructional methodology is provided to progress and average of 1 point (on the 4 point scale) by the end of the school year.
