Goal

This project will introduce my first grade students to the basic concepts associated with financial literacy and help all students achieve success with mathematics standards and benchmarks.
Through this program I will teach students about money and math while deepening student learning through movement and mindfulness.

What will be done with my students

This project will allow me to teach my students the basics of how to count money, identify coins and make “smart money choices” by adding an online program ‘Go Noodle Plus’ to the math curriculum that the county provides. I will also be using magnetic writing boards and double sided magnetic money as tools to teach my students about money per one of our first grade standards.
Go Noodle Plus is an online program that integrates academic concepts and lessons with music and movement activities, games, and exercises in an extremely FUN and engaging way.
Through this program my students will have the opportunity to participate in interactive learning games and “mega math marathons.” I will be using the program to introduce and review academic concepts, to add movement and excitement to classroom lessons and to engage reluctant learners.
This program is so much fun and so engaging for students! For example, our students will have the opportunity to “Getcha Money Right” with guided dancing activities. They will get to “Double Your Money” with ‘brain gym’ gross motor skills and will integrate math and money concepts in “Mega Math Marathons.”
After being able to learn these money and math concepts through movement and music they can practice these skills using the magnet writing boards and magnetic money. They will be able to put their skills to use with these tools. I am so excited that our students will get to move, sing, dance and learn to love math in a new way through this project!

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit my students in so many exciting ways! This program will allow me to accommodate a wide variety of learning styles while making students active learners in FUN and engaging activities.
This program will increase our students’ knowledge about the basics of counting money, different types of money and addition and subtraction concepts using money.
While engaging in academic tasks, students will also be working on:
-Body coordination, growth mindset, and mindfulness activities that are designed to enhance focus, confidence and self-control.
-Sensory and motor skills designed to enhance body awareness, balance and coordination.
-Memory, stretching, brain-based learning exercises.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of this program is how much students love this program. Students will be incredibly motivated and engaged in these activities which promote true comprehension and excitement about learning.

Describe the Students

My classroom is filled with 19 very energetic, excited six and seven year old students. My students are excited about learning but have limited resources. 100% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch services.

60% of my students are enrolled in the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program. These students have a variety of first languages including Spanish, Portuguese and Bosnian.

Currently, over 50% of my students are identified as "not meeting expectations" or "low performers". (This is likely due to their limited English and limited resources.)

Budget Narrative

Go Noodle Plus, the magnetic money, and magnetic writing boards will increase my students' knowledge about money and get them moving at the same time.
