Goal

My goal through this grant is to meet the sensory needs of our students with special needs, primarily Autism, though the use of pressure vests and weighted blankets within the classroom. These students require calming deep pressure throughout the school day in order to be able to attend to and participate in the academic and social activities during the school day.

What will be done with my students

I am an Occupational Therapist who provides therapy services to ESE students, most of whom have Autism. These students and my other ESE students with ADHD, developmental delay, and other diagnoses require sensory supports throughout the school day. I work daily with the teachers to ensure that the students have tools to meet sensory needs within the classroom, which is most efficiently provided through the use of pressure vests and weighted blankets. These tools help students remain calm and focused and also help calm a student who is agitated. Through years of daily use, the pressure vests have disintegrated and the weighted blankets no longer distribute the weight correctly. With this grant, I will be able to provided needed support for years for the entire population of ESE students at my school.

Benefits to my students

My students use pressure vests and weighted blankets daily, and many will ask for them independently to get through the school day. The outcome: a new supply of pressure vests and weighted blankets will allow all of our students to continually have their sensory needs met. My job as a therapist is to provide support so ESE students can access and participate in their education. The teachers at my school already routinely use these tools successfully under my guidance, which allows sensory needs to be met within the classroom. This helps students remain calm and attentive throughout the school day, thus decreasing both tantrums and removal of a student from the classroom for a sensory break. It allows students to focus and learn, and also allows for the teacher to focus on teaching rather than managing sensory needs because the vests and blankets can be used DURING instruction. My students routinely wear the pressure vests during challenging academic tasks or situations where they may become agitated such as assemblies or in the cafeteria. I try to have at least 2 vests and one blanket accessible at all times to students in the self-contained ASD (Autism) classrooms. Students are able to share the tools throughout the day. I already have a successful program in place with the students and with these tools. With your generosity I can replace our vests and blankets and continue this approach.

Describe the Students

My students are ESE students pre-K through 5th grade. Although we are a typical elementary school, McMullen Booth also has 5 self-contained classrooms specially designed for students with Autism. Many of our students with disabilities spend part or all of their day in a general education classroom. My students vary in their language, social, and cognitive capabilities and each one requires individualized therapy, education plans, and sensory supports.

Budget Narrative

The above vests and blankets are available to all students at my school and last several years. Your generosity will make a significant impact on the learning and behavior of our students for an extended time. Thank You!
