Goal

Students will learn how to balance a budget applying math skills while using the classroom environment.

What will be done with my students

The students will be given classroom jobs that they will be paid for with classroom token money. They will need to pay rent for their desk, electricity bill etc. There will also be fines to pay for late homework etc. At the end of the month after they pay all of their bills they will be able to buy various items from the classroom store. (classroom supplies with their money, trinkets and toys, donate items to nonprofit organizations) They will also be able to shop for gifts around the holidays with this money. I started this two years ago with my students and I need to replenish my store to continue with this program.

Benefits to my students

By living in a real classroom economy, the students will learn the benefit of balancing a budget and understanding the value of a dollar and how to save for things they want and how to also have money for necessities. They will also learn the importance of providing goods and services to non-profit organizations through service learning.

Describe the Students

44 third gifted third graders in a math/science gifted program for half of the school day.

Budget Narrative

The items above will be placed in the classroom store so students will be able to have the opportunity to spend their classroom token money after balancing their personal budget. In this real world classroom environment students will gain financial literacy while applying mathematics.
