My goals in writing this grant is to allow students to have flexible options for seating, especially during reading times. I have had many students who are reluctant readers and just need that extra motivation to be comfortable while reading. I have had two beach chairs for many years in my classroom, but it just is never enough for a full class of 22-25 at a time. This grant would allow me to purchase other types of seating for the entire class.

Goal

My goals in writing this grant is to allow students to have flexible options for seating, especially during reading times. I have had many students who are reluctant readers and just need that extra motivation to be comfortable while reading. I have had two beach chairs for many years in my classroom, but it just is never enough for a full class of 22-25 at a time. This grant would allow me to purchase other types of seating for the entire class.

What will be done with my students

Students will be allowed to have choice seating around the classroom for reading time. This will engage and motivate the students and allow for frequent movement when needed to help build stamina in reading.
I would like to purchase beach towel, ball chairs and portable lap desks to give all students a choice during reading.

Benefits to my students

Research shows that students who are motivated to learn will be better readers and score higher on academic testing. Choice is widely acknowledged as a method for enhancing motivation. Allowing young children to make even a minimal task choice increased learning from the task and enhanced subsequent interest in the activity (Cordova & Lepper, 1996; Iyengar & Lepper, 1999). This grant ties into the choice of seating options and comfort in the task.
Several options such as beach chairs, beach towels, wobble seats, and other various of chairs will enhance my classroom and increase motivation and ultimately reading scores. Allowing students to have choices does the following:
*increases motivation
*allows opportunities for movement which is directly linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior
*improves focus for students who have ADD / ADHD or have sensory issues

Describe the Students

Our school population is the following: 5% Asian, 6% Black, 22% Hispanic, 5% Multi-racial and 62% White. 37% of our school received free or reduced lunch based on income in the 2018-2019 school year. My 2019-2020 class has not been created yet, but in the past I have had a diverse mix of students and a large population of Special Needs students, as I teach the ESE students in 4th grade. I have had a balanced classroom of high, medium and low performing students.

Budget Narrative

The funds being requested will help fill my classroom with optional seating to create adventures in reading.
