The goal of this project is to have my Kindergarten students receive additional exposure to print in order to meet English/Language Arts standards by the end of this school year. Kindergarten students are emergent readers who require many opportunities working with print in order to build a foundation in reading and writing. The Lets Find Out kindergarten magazine introduces seasonal Science and Social Studies topics with predictable nonfiction texts that reinforce our curriculum and help meet standards.

Goal

The goal of this project is to have my Kindergarten students receive additional exposure to print in order to meet English/Language Arts standards by the end of this school year. Kindergarten students are emergent readers who require many opportunities working with print in order to build a foundation in reading and writing. The Lets Find Out kindergarten magazine introduces seasonal Science and Social Studies topics with predictable nonfiction texts that reinforce our curriculum and help meet standards.

What will be done with my students

The funding from this project will provide each student with a subscription to the Kindergarten magazine Lets Find Out. This magazine covers theme based Science and Social Studies topics using predictable informational texts. I will be developing a "Let's Find Out" Center for students to visit during our daily Literacy Centers. During Literacy Centers students rotate through a variety of literacy-based activities. These activities provide hands-on practice in skills introduced during large group instruction. Skills may include: answer questions about key details, main idea, make connections, increase print concepts, compose an opinion piece based on text, learn Science and Social studies concepts. The subscription also offers supplemental digital editions, videos and other online resources that will supplement our curriculum. Let's Find Out will be infused through the school year and integrated into our daily schedule as follows. Each week the new magazine will be introduced with student expectations modeled by the teacher. This will help familiarize students with the magazine topic along with work expectations for the Lets Find Out Literacy Center that week. This center will be part of the student work rotation for student to visit weekly. The Center will contain student copies of the magazine, markers, pencils and various needed tools that they will use to work with their own copy. As students complete their work, they will take their copy home for sharing with families for further practice. The rotations will continue through the week for all students to have an opportunity to work with their copy before taken home.

Benefits to my students

Kindergarten students are emergent readers and writers. They enter Kindergarten with a variety of literary experience. Some students read with a minimal understanding of what the words mean. Some students are just beginning to learn letter names and sounds. This project will provide each student with their own copy of a magazine that they can work with at their own skill level both at school and then at home with families. Each student will benefit by having more exposure to print. This will help increase reading comprehension, print concept skills, writing, and language skills, along with proficiency in Science and Social Studies topics. The use of this classroom magazine will help our students in making progress in meet English/Language Arts standards while working with Science and Social Studies.

Describe the Students

Our 2019-2020 student rosters have not been created at this point. Based on previous class data, our self-contained Kindergarten population contains a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. Our classrooms may contain some ESE population that includes speech-impaired students, language impaired students, and vision impaired students along with ESOL students. Our population is as follows: 5% Asian, 6% Black, 22% Hispanic, 5% Multi-racial and 62% White. 37% of our school received free or reduced lunch based on income in the 2018-2019 school year.
