Goal

The goal of this grant it to purchase additional types of flexible seating to enhance the options currently available in my Kindergarten classroom.

What will be done with my students

ring the 2018-2019 school year I was given the opportunity to pilot a flexible seating classroom for the Early Elementary Education Department within the Pinellas County School system. My students enjoyed the opportunity to select their seat every day in our classroom. Students were afforded the ability to choose a different type of seat each day as well as having different tablemates throughout the year. I noticed that their engagement was on point and the flexible options were not an academic deterrent at all. The choice of their seating came with a responsibility to select a seat and tablemates that would not interrupt the academic integrity of our room. I can count on one hand the amount of times I had to have a conversation with a student about making good choices. In addition, students were given one warning to correct their seating if they were not following the seat directions (i.e. of not bounce on the balls). I had only one student throughout the entire academic year that had to be moved due to non-rule compliance.

This grant will allow for the purchase of 5 additional types of flexible seating for my classroom. This will give my students a total of 10 different choices of seating every day. I am very excited to implement and expand on this program in my classroom this year.

Benefits to my students

Many of my students come to school tired and unmotivated and some of my students come to school full of energy. So, you can imagine the challenge of 5 and 6 year olds having to sit in the hard plastic chairs and tables for 8 hours. I want to provide my students with a learning environment where they are provided the opportunity to choose a comfortable/flexible seating arrangement on a daily basis. This choice in conjunction with the unique seating options will stimulate or release the excess energy while remaining motivated and engaged in their learning task!

Describe the Students

Our 2019-2020 student rosters have not been created at this point. Based on previous class data, our self-contained Kindergarten population contains a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. Our classrooms may contain some ESE population that includes speech-impaired students, language impaired students, and vision impaired students along with ESOL students. Our population is as follows: 5% Asian, 6% Black, 22% Hispanic, 5% Multi-racial and 62% White. 37% of our school received free or reduced lunch based on income in the 2018-2019 school year.
