Goal

Students will build fluency in addition and subtraction facts, analyzing and understanding of coding skills , which will assist them in the comprehension, clarification, and construction of technology, and instrumentation of robots and drones.

What will be done with my students

Fluency and automaticity in adding and subtraction is essential for students who are using technology or extending their ideology from mental math and paper based analyzation into a real world activity. By building math fluency, students will be able to code and incorporate their thinking when constructing a robot and its movements, or flying a drone and understanding its capabilities. Second grade does an insect unit which will parallel the drone activity and understand movement and purpose of why it is important for insects to fly. Dash Bots will be introduced and used to create drawings programmed by our young learners. As a technology school, this will prepare them for the following year, when they will be using Dell laptops and working with the 3D program application. The more we can scaffold with these students, bit by bit, the more prepared they will be to want to initiate higher thinking skills for math, coding, and technology.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to our students is bridging the gap between second and third grade thinking. Dash Bots are introduced in third grade. With implementation in second grade the students will be able to code and extend their thinking and creativity. The STEM kit for the Dash Bots allows the students to program a particular drawing, use Dash Bot pens to draw it through robotics, and bring it forward to a visual culmination. By mastering this in second grade, third grade skills will have been scaffolded and students will be able to critically think about different outcomes rather than choosing one outcome. Third grade math for FSA (Florida State Assessment) problem solves for multiple responses. This is based on our enrollment of 51 students and three second grade teachers.

Describe the Students

Our second grade students have a population that is 72% from multiple ethnicities, 15% Hispanic/Latino, 7% African American, and 6% African America/Hispanic/Latino.
Our second grade students have a population that is 31% high performing with 2% receiving speech and language supports. 4% of our students in the general education population are receiving ESE speech/language supports. 4% of varying exceptionalities are receiving speech and language supports. 2% are DHH, Deaf and Hard of Hearing. 57% of the General Education population have no ESE accommodations.

Budget Narrative

The population of our second grade students at our Technology Magnet Program is diverse in culture, (African American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Mixed) socioeconomic backgrounds, and student exceptionalities. We have a combination of low and high performing students, speech and language impaired and autism disorders. We are proud to serve all children and families. This budget will provide math manips, drones, STEM building activities, and storage boxes for safe storage and organization to serve our students.
