Goal

Thinking Maps: Write from the Beginning and Beyond has three goals: 1 – to improve writing instructional strategies; 2 – to establish a common focus of writing instruction among multiple classrooms; and 3 - to improve student performance of writing opinion and informational texts.

What will be done with my students

After participation in the Write from the Beginning and Beyond K-8 professional development training, both classroom teachers, as students themselves, and students will be provided the opportunity to build and improve their writing skills. First, classroom teachers become the will be invited to attend workshops that will show them how to meet the individual writing needs of their students. The workshops will help teachers facilitate differentiation strategies and assess students’ areas of strength and areas where improvement is needed. Teachers will transfer their knowledge to their students through a change in their instructional practices. According to the Thinking Maps website, “With Write from the Beginning and Beyond, teachers don’t just follow a program─they build their capacity as writing teachers.” Secondly, students will be able to take advantage of their teachers’ learning to improve their writing. Students in the model classroom will use their previous understanding of the use of Thinking Maps to move toward the more rigorous task of synthesizing and analyzing multiple resources to write knowledgeably about a topic. This will be a direct result of attending this multi-day professional development training and applying what is learned.

Benefits to my students

One outcome of participating in Write from the Beginning and Beyond professional development will be the opportunity to lead on-going workshops for classroom teachers, thus the teachers will be the first “students” impacted. According to the Thinking Maps website, a result of this training will be “to establish a school-wide focus on effective writing across all grade levels and content areas”. As a fifth-grade teacher for many years, it has become evident that our students would benefit greatly from a clear, concise, and collaborative school-wide effort to provide instruction that builds year to year. Another outcome of this professional development is that it will provide students the opportunity to participate in mini-lessons that have been designed to “address the essential criteria of effective writing”.

Describe the Students

Write from the Beginning and Beyond K-8 professional development training will target two groups of students. Group one will be classroom teachers in grades K-5. This group is made up of roughly 45 teachers with varied backgrounds and teaching experiences. Group two is made up of twenty-two students that include all demographics such as students with learning disabilities, English language learners, gifted, economically disadvantaged and at-risk students. This group of students will be the model classroom for the teachers in group one.
