Goal

To attend the Teacher's College Reading Project Training at Columbia University to study methods for planning curriculum in the teaching of reading using the Units of Study by Lucy Calkins in the reading workshop that align reading instruction to the global standards.

What will be done with my students

I will use knowledge I learn at the Teacher's College Reading Project training at Columbia University and the Units of Study Curriculum by Lucy Calkins as a reference and resource when writing the curriculum for 4th grade in ELA for Pinellas County Schools. I will also use this resource and information directly with my students when teaching the different reading standards.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to: make gains in reading comprehension, self-assess and set personal goals, use accountable talk as a vehicle for comprehension, be a part of meaningful book clubs, be supported in foundational skills, receive meaningful small group instruction, understand cross-textual work in nonfiction, and write knowledgeably about the text.

Describe the Students

2018-2019 4th grade classes I teach at Cypress Woods Elementary: 48 students, 19 gifted, 2 ESE, 5 speech, 4 with 504 accommodations, 1 ESOL

Due to being on the focus team that writes the curriculum for 4th grade ELA there is a much larger variety of students. We have 74 elementary schools with 40,154 students enrolled in elementary. Estimating there are four 4th grade classes per school, with 24 kids in each class, there are roughly 7,000 4th graders in Pinellas County Schools.

Budget Narrative

The Teacher's College Reading Project Camp at Columbia University in New York is a fixed fee of $850.00. I researched different flights and found that an average flight to New York City, round trip was around $400.00. I researched different hotels that were suggested by the Teacher's College Reading Project and the average price was around $145.00 a night at 6 nights is an average of $870.00, so I rounded it to $850.00.
