Goal

To assist our neediest GED students to pay their tuition to remain in class at Tomlinson Adult Learning Center

What will be done with my students

My students will be able to continue to attend adult education (GED) classes to work toward achieving their GED diplomas.

Benefits to my students

Many of our students do not have the $30.00 tuition to continue their studies at Tomlinson. The tuition waivers will allow them to continue to work toward their GED completion.

Describe the Students

Many of our students are low-wage workers or they are on public assistance. Many are single mothers.

Budget Narrative

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median weekly earnings of full-time workers without a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalency are $515.00. (July, 2017). The median weekly earnings of full-time workers with a high school diploma are $718.00. To begin to close this gap, Tomlinson Adult Learning Center in St. Petersburg offers day, evening, and online GED classes. However, some of our students in the lowest socio-economic bracket have difficulty paying the $30.00 tuition. They work or receive public assistance, and often do not have extra funds to pay their tuition. Tuition is $30.00 three times per year; this covers testing and all curriculum materials. The purpose of this grant is to provide 10 of our neediest students with $30.00 tuition waivers so they can continue advancing their education to obtain higher-earning jobs. An increase in hourly wage brings substantially increased quality of life to our students and their families. Additionally, they are then eligible for higher education at the Pinellas Technical Centers and St. Petersburg College.
