Goal

Collaborative Swimming in the Sea of Learning is a project that provides accommodations to integrate financial literacy into daily instruction in our self-contained special education classroom. The goal of this project will be to
redesign the self-contained special education classroom into a setting that fosters collaborative learning. Students will work in groups that compliment each others strengths and assist one another to develop their reading and math skills in a setting that helps them learn how to socialize appropriately.

What will be done with my students

The dynamics of the classroom will be redesigned in a fashion that fosters collaborative learning. Students will engage in project based learning, building on each other's strengths to complete cross-curricular activities. They will work together to learn sound out and identify words, count objects to solve math equations, and discuss problems to find resolutions.

Benefits to my students

Collaborative Swimming in the Sea of Learning will provide the self-contained special education classroom with furnishings that enable students to easily group together and work collaboratively to develop real world skills. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge to help their peers and to increase their knowledge through ongoing practice. The colaborative seating will aid in developing important life-skills that will help them to be able to function independently in society.

Describe the Students

The Sea of Learning is a self-contained special education classroom of students receiving Access Point instruction, located in a Title 1 school. 100% of the students are in the free lunch program. The class educates up to twelve children ranging in age from 8-11. All the students are intellectually disabled and language impaired with other disabilities including blind, deaf, autistic, cerebral palsy &./or downs syndrome. 90% of the students come from low socioeconomic households. 70% of the students are Black or Hispanic.

Budget Narrative

The requested $926.00 provides a self-contained special education classroom with alternative seating that transforms the classroom into a collaborative learning center, buying 3 mobile desk and chair combinations that allow fluid transitioning throughout the classroom to allow students to work together to learn important life skills. Remaining funds will be used to purchase adapted seating cushions to accommodate the positioning needs of two of our smaller stature students, allowing better collaboration for everyone working to help the students develop important skills.
