Goal

My goal of this grant is to provide students daily access to books that reflect their own cultural identities, experiences and family units.

This grant would allow fifth grade readers to feel connected and accepted in the classroom; building strong relationships and building trust while growing their reading skills and cultural and social identities.

What will be done with my students

A critical step in helping students feel welcomed and connected to their peers and teachers is by providing current, quality literature in which they feel seen and valued. Our classroom libraries are full of wonderful books, however, many of those books are outdated. If our classroom libraries continue to be inconsistent with the lives of our students, we will continue to miss these frequent opportunities to teach empathy, understanding and to be inclusive of lifestyles and cultures different than our own.

I plan on updating my classroom library with books including a variety of topics and characters such as: refugee families across the globe and the visibility of various family units. This will be a powerful tool to normalize everyone's families and celebrate student's similarities and differences.

Students will have daily access to these books in my classroom. These new additions to the classroom library will allow them to gain perspectives into others' worlds while also seeing aspects of their own lives mirrored as well. An increased interest in quality literature will continue to develop their reading stamina, comprehension and fluency.

Benefits to my students

Research shows that when students feel welcomed, accepted and heard in the classroom the climate improves and performance is increased. Young children should feel represented and celebrated in all parts of their life and that includes schools and bookshelves. The majority of publications purchased in the past include a very homogeneous group of characters, family units and struggles. In an increasingly diverse world, my hope is for my students to connect and feel valued through the literature they have access to in my classroom. This level of inclusivity will increase student engagement and acceptance of themselves and others.

Describe the Students

My fifth graders are an extremely hard-working, inquisitive and witty group! Most topics are of high interest to them and they soak up all of the knowledge and typically want to know more!

I teach 42 students Reading/Writing (ELA) and Social Studies. This is the perfect environment to grow their social and cultural identities and (hopefully) raise a group of citizens with solid foundations of empathy, acceptance and open-mindedness.

I work at a Title 1 school which means the majority of our students are from low-income families. We have a very diverse student population with different needs and language abilities. Several of my students are English Language Learners and adjusting to live in the United States.

Budget Narrative

I have an itemized book list separated into three categories: Multicultural, Refugees, and Family Units. I will order the books through Scholastic. All books were specifically chosen by me to increase cultural awareness and to expose students to quality grade-level literature.
