Goal

The goal of this project is to enhance the financial literacy AND reading curriculum of our 5th grade students!

What will be done with my students

These workbooks will be used for their numerous passages (with a whole unit on MONEY!), as well as in reading whole group and small group instruction.

The books have been used in my Extended Learning Program as a small group tutoring resource. As they were being used, we realized what a valuable resource they were for driving our reading instruction, AND that they reinforce other cross-curricular concepts, such as financial literacy and STEM.

We were able to get these books through the Achieva grant last year! We were grateful to receive them and would love to again.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to my students is that they are being exposed to many different types of passages on topics that are covered in fifth grade, as well as topics that were covered previously in third and fourth grades. The booklets are also an AMAZING reading resource! Each lesson is aligned to a LAFS standard and gives the opportunity to teach, practice, and assess. In fifth grade, the students take on the task of a whole grade field trip to Enterprise Village. Not only will this book increase my students' reading comprehension skills, but it will expose them to texts to make them financially literate for the field trip and their futures!

Describe the Students

My students have my heart. They are the sweetest kids I have ever met, and they DESPERATELY want to make learning gains and to be successful. We have a mixture of English language learners, students with disabilities, and low and high performers.

My school draws from a very low-income community, and due to the financial status of the area and the student population, all students receive free lunch! My school is very lucky to receive Title I funding and corporate donations, and my students are so grateful. High Point is a positive, beautiful, safe environment for children to learn in and I know that our students would be so appreciative of these materials!
