Goal

Students will be introduced to 2nd grade science topics and students will be able to investigate, compare, experiment, and enhance their learning through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

What will be done with my students

Students will find and watch their pulses, meet a bony friend, and explore the importance of our stomach, intestines, muscles, and lungs.
Students will conduct an experiment with some of our resident insects, while learning about their characteristics, life cycles, behaviors, and habitats.
They will investigate and compare the properties of various objects and substances.
Students will enhance their learning through activities that involve soil classification and water retention while developing an understanding of soil’s role in plant life cycles

Benefits to my students

Students gain a higher understanding of the science topics taught in second grade by experience them first hand. Students will be able to explore and experiment like a real scientist. Students will be able to make connections with what they learned in the classroom and make real world observations and that they can bring back to the classroom. The topics they will learn about in second grade is building a foundation for science topics introduced in the intermediate grades. These students will have the schema to grasp these topics in the future.

Describe the Students

Campbell Park Elementary is located in a low income neighborhood. Many students are labeled ESE and have difficulty learning due to traumatic experiences. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to venture out of St. Petersburg.
