Goal

The goal of this project is to enhance the STEM AND reading curriculum of our 5th grade students!

What will be done with my students

These workbooks will be used for their numerous science based passages (almost ALL the nonfiction passages are on a science concept!), as well as in reading whole group and small group instruction.

The books are a really valuable resource they were that drive reading instruction AND expose the students to STEM topics like hydroelectric power/engineering, electricity, and numerous technical texts.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to my students is that they are being exposed to many science, technology, and engineering passages on topics that are covered in fifth grade, as well as topics that were covered previously in third and fourth grades. In fifth grade, the students take the SSA - Science Standards Assessment. This test not only assesses fifth grade standards, but third and fourth as well. The STEM topics presented in the Ready booklets cover multi-grade concepts that will reinforce any prior knowledge and fill the gaps.

Describe the Students

My students have my heart. For the past two years, I have only taught reading and writing, and this year I am teaching all subjects! I am so excited to teach math and science again this year. They are the sweetest kids I have ever met, and they DESPERATELY want to make learning gains and to be successful. I have one student who is very new to English, as well as other English language learners, students with disabilities, and low and high performers.

My school draws from a very low-income community, and due to the financial status of the area and the student population, all students receive free lunch! My school is very lucky to receive Title I funding and corporate donations, and my students are so grateful. High Point is a positive, beautiful, safe environment for children to learn in and I know that our students would be so appreciative of these materials!
