Our goal is to facilitate access to the Discovery Education online Science Techbook (textbook) that was adopted by Pinellas County Middle Schools beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Since the new textbook is online, the Kindle device would assist us in delivering instruction in a dynamic way that engages today’s learner. Without the Kindle, the students’ knowledge and access would be greatly restricted.

Goal

Our goal is to facilitate access to the Discovery Education online Science Techbook (textbook) that was adopted by Pinellas County Middle Schools beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Since the new textbook is online, the Kindle device would assist us in delivering instruction in a dynamic way that engages today’s learner. Without the Kindle, the students’ knowledge and access would be greatly restricted.

What will be done with my students

The students will have individual every-other-day access to the online Science Techbook (as Mrs. Cascone and Mrs. Rubaii would be sharing the devices). It would increase student knowledge and academic performance by allowing them to: (1) watch an engaging video to hook their interest, (2) choose a text at their reading level from dozens of choices, (3) give students access to a digital glossary that shows definitions as well as animations (4) have read-aloud support in both English and Spanish, and (5) perform virtual labs and engage in interactive simulations, and (6) have teacher access to available real-time data.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of each student having an individual Kindle would be to engage them with current and relevant multimedia content, virtual labs, and interactive activities. Without Kindles, access to the online textbook would be much less frequent and would likely involve more reading from a print-out of the digital text.

According to Discovery Education, when this program was piloted in Collier County Public Schools, 66% of English Language Learners scored proficiently or higher on state tests and saw a 17-point increase in 8th grade state science test scores.

Describe the Students

Our school has 35% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. It is 70% White, 4% Black, 18% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 5% Multiracial. It has 3% students with disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners.

Mrs. Cascone's students are low performing. 25% are English Language Learners. 34% have learning disabilities. These students have not scored well on state tests of math and language arts.

The students whom Mrs. Rubaii teaches are high achieving: either students who earned 4's or 5's on both their 5th grade state tests for language arts and math or students who did well on the MAP (reading) test. Less than 1% are English Language Learners, less than 1% are students with disabilities, and 67% of these students are gifted.

Budget Narrative

Our average class size will be 24-25 for the upcoming school year. Therefore, we are requesting a Kindle for each student in one class. Since students read and learn at different rates, it is not possible for students to share Kindles. The Kindles will be handled by multiple students each day, and will be traded between the two teachers on an every-other-day basis, so they need to be protected by a cover. The charging station is needed to ensure that the Kindles are fully operational each day. For security purposes, the storage tub is lockable.
